Coaching Requirements

Every coach, both head and assistance coaches, is required to:

1) Submit a Background Check request online every 2 years. This step initiates the background check process. If you submitted a background check request in the previous year, it is not required for the current year. New coaches are required to go online (click HERE) and submit the requested information.

2) Complete an online concussion every 3 years. The State of Ohio allows for the completion of one of two available courses. CYSA is now accepting completion of either course. The NFHS course is geared toward high school players. The CDC course is geared toward all ages. If you submitted a completion certificate in the previous 2 years, it is not required for the current year. New coaches are required to complete one of the courses. Once completed, upload the certificate to the website.

To complete the NFHS course click  HERE. You will then either register or sign-in if previously registered. Once signed in coaches will then 'Order Course'. Coaches will be given the opportunity to print a completion certification. It is recommended that the certificate be saved to a .pdffile and printed from the .pdf file. A copy of the completion certificate must be submitted to their Division Coordinator.

3) Complete SafeSport Training. On March 6, 2017 a bill was introduced to amend the Victims of Child Abuse Act of 1990. The Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017 was signed into law on February 14, 2018. This law is in effect and should be adhered to by all SAY Soccer members. This amendment extends the duty of SAY members to report suspected child abuse, including sexual abuse, to adults who are authorized to interact with minor or amateur athletes at a facility under the jurisdiction of a national governing body. A national governing body (U.S. Soccer) is an amateur sports organization that is recognized by the International Olympic Committee. The full legislation is available for download HERE

The second part of this amendment defines the purpose of the U.S. Center for Safe Sport. This organization must maintain an office for education and outreach that shall develop training, oversight practices, policies, and procedures to prevent the abuse, including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, of amateur athletes participating in amateur athletic activities through their national governing bodies and Paralympic sports organizations. It is designed to promote a safe environment in sports for any amateur athlete. The U.S. Center for SafeSport has multiple resources that can be found HERE

All coaches must complete the online SafeSport training, which includes sexual misconduct awareness, emotional and physical misconduct, and mandatory reporting. Upon successful completion of the training the participant will receive an overall SafeSport Training Certificate. SafeSport Training is required to be completed every two years.  All SafeSport training participants should take care to use their same legal name as shown on their Driver’s License or Passport when filling out the SafeSport forms.

In order to access the training, an access code is required. Please contact your Division coordinator for the access code.

The link to SafeSport training will be provided by CYSA via email to volunteers required to take the training.  Once you have completed the course, you will receive a certificate. Please save a copy of the certificate to your computer. Upload the certificate to the website.
